James Madison University

Involvement
- I was very involved in organizations outside of my rigorous academic schedule. As a sophomore I was part of a group of young men who decided to start a chapter of Alpha Tau Omega , the Leadership Development Fraternity. I chose to help lead these men by being the Historian on the executive committee because the position called for a person who was comfortable writing and keeping chapter records organized. I served as Public Relations Chairman in my Junior and Senior years to use my skills as a professional communicator. I produced a weekly newsletter, The Positive Experience Chronicle, to keep the fraternity up to date on events and obligations. The Fraternity grew from 30 men to 100 men in the three years since its inception. We recently won a school-wide award for Top Organization on Campus.
- As a Junior I was elected Secretary of the Society of Technical Communicators at James Madison University for my senior year. The skills involved included recording chapter minutes and organizing various fund raising ventures at local businesses.
- Through Alpha Tau Omega I was able to give back to Harrisonburg, VA through various activities. I am most proud of my consistent involvement in the tutoring of young children at a local elementary school. I tutored there from 2006-2009. I also helped organize the Fraternity’s philanthropy event Rock for Random Acts of Kindness by setting up student transportation to and from the event and creating program guides.
Work Experience
- I have been covering Ridgewood (NJ) High School sports through a hyper-local online community called Ridgewood Patch. It is owned by AOL and can be found here. I have enjoyed following a diverse range of sports from gymnastics to ice hockey. As a journalist I have been able to improve my writing, interviewing and photography skills through my work with Ridgewood Patch.
- I am currently employed by News Corporation. I am working as a teleprompter operator at Fox News and Fox Business. This experience is proving to be extremely valuable because I am learning about live television journalism. Fox News consistently has the highest rating of the competing cable news channels so I am able to discern the content that people find worth watching.
- I worked for the Mine Action Information Center from November 2006 to December 2008, then as an Intern from January 2009 to November 2009. At MAIC he worked as an Editorial Assistant. The main tasks that were accomplished on a daily basis were editing articles written by authors from around the world, writing articles about various topics in the field of Mine Action and corresponding with contacts around the world concerning information and content for the Journal of Mine Action.
- During the summers I worked as a caddy at Knickerbocker Country Club. I worked five days a week, Wednesday through Sunday. This experience gave me strong interpersonal skills and the ability to accommodate demanding golfers in tournaments and moments of frustration.
Technical Skills
- As a writer, I have taken courses in various aspects of writing; news, government and legal. I have basic knowledge in several of the AdobeSuite programs; Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. Being a Media and Design major, I have learned to create blogs, podcasts, videos, edit images and use a camera. In several classes I have helped develop websites and published products for clients. I am interested in business and have taken a general business class and an entrepreneurship class that have given me a general knowledge of many aspects of business.
